Michelle Obama made her first solo visit as First Lady outside Washington, DC, to Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

She met soldiers and their families, visited the child development center at the base, and read 'The Cat in the Hat' to the preschoolers.

Later, at the Fayetteville Arts Center, she spoke on the need for better benefits for soldiers and their families. She paid a tribute to "servicemen and women who [are] at their posts across this nation and around the world, as I speak ... standing watch and ... providing the security of our daily lives."
