Canada: politicians fight over the economy
Canadian Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff yesterday accused the conservative Harper government of presiding over the worst collapse in employment in Canadian history. He said 300,000 jobs had been lost in the first three months of 2009.
The conservatives reacted by attacking his musings that taxes may have to be raised to pay the deficits being racked up by the conservative government. Transport Minister John Baird said "raising taxes killed jobs".
But Ignatieff said the liberals had eliminated the deficits left by the Tory government in the 1990s, and did not need any lessons from conservatives on fiscal prudence.
