Elections in Ivory Coast may be delayed again
Elections in the world's top cocoa grower, Ivory Coast, scheduled for this year, may be delayed yet again.
The elections have been due since 2005, when mandate for the present president, Laurent Gbagbo, ran out. Before this, a 2002 coup attempt by Guillaume Soro had sliced the country into two. After peace agreements in 2007, the country reunited under a power-sharing agreement with Soro as prime minister.
If elections are not held this year, Soro and his New Forces (FN) have threatened to pull out of the peace process, and this might plunge the country into chaos again.
